PITTSTON TWP. — U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., arrived at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport on Tuesday around 9 p.m., ahead of a full day of campaigning in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
McCain was scheduled to arrive at the airport around 8:40 p.m., but his plane, the Straight Talk Express, was a few minutes behind schedule. The giant 737 jet landed smoothly on the far runway, and the massive jet dwarfed the regional jet that had landed just behind it.
McCain hosted a town hall meeting in Rochester, N.H., before his arrival in Northeastern Pennsylvania. He will host another one at the F.M. Kirby Center, on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre, today at 8 a.m. Afterward, the senator will attend a private fundraising luncheon at the Westmoreland Club.
His campaign did not heavily publicize his arrival, so the senator arrived with little fanfare on Tuesday. There were no representatives from the local Republican party to greet him, and only a handful of bystanders came to see his motorcade.
Among those who waited patiently for McCain’s arrival The Grabiez family, of Avoca. They have gone to the airport to greet all three presidential candidates during this campaign.
“Our state is traditionally important,” said Sherwood Grabiez, who has enjoyed witnessing history in his own back yard.
The national media assembled their equipment in anticipation of McCain’s exit, but the senator did not make a statement. Instead, he descended quietly down the stairs and into a silver Chevrolet Suburban.
