The Canton Fire Department’s benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this past weekend raised more than $200.

The fire department hosted a poker run and a chicken barbecue Saturday.

“Even though we only had 17 participants (a total of 10 bikes and one truck), over $200 was raised to donate to MDA,” Sue Barrett, a fire department member, said. “Not a lot, but any amount can help. It would have been nice to have more people turn out, but the ones that did participate had a good time, enjoyed the ride and the dinner afterwards. And we do want to thank those who did participate in the fundraiser.”

She said attendance was low on Saturday, most likely due to the weather that morning.

“But the weather did clear up about an hour before the ride was to leave and stayed clear throughout the ride,” she said.

According to a news release from the fire department:

MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. More than 1 million Americans are affected by neuromuscular diseases. About 250,000 have some form of muscular dystrophy. MDA is funded almost entirely by individual, private voluntary contributions and seeks no fees from those it serves.
