TOWANDA — The Bradford County commissioners on Thursday approved a contract with a Mechanicsburg company to assist in developing a strategic plan to improve the county’s criminal justice system.
The commissioners also appointed eight individuals to the Bradford County Tourism Committee, which makes recommendations on how to use the county’s share of the room tax that is levied in Bradford County.
The commissioners on Thursday approved a contract with the Davison Group Inc. of Mechanicsburg to assist in developing the Bradford County Criminal Justice Advisory Board’s strategic plan.
“There are lots of things we need to do in Bradford County to keep up with developments in the criminal justice system,” Bradford County Assistant District Attorney Al Ondrey has said, explaining why the plan will be useful.
The Davison Group’s role in developing the plan will be to interview members of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board, facilitate a workshop in early November where members of the board will work on the plan, and provide other assistance, said Ondrey, who is chairman of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board.
“We thought we would have the workshop away from people’s offices, so they could focus their full attention on the planning process,” Ondrey said.
The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency requires county criminal justice advisory boards to have a strategic plan in place, he said.
The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime & Delinquency has awarded the county a $25,000 grant to develop the plan.
The Bradford County Criminal Justice Advisory Board, which includes officials from county departments that are part of the local criminal justice system, makes recommendations on how to improve the criminal justice system in Bradford County.
The Davison Group has helped develop strategic plans for criminal justice advisory boards throughout the state, Ondrey said.
Bradford County Commissioner Doug McLinko said the development of the strategic plans is “pretty helpful.”
“It does bear fruit if it is done right,” he said. “I know Al will do a good job on it.”
Ondrey said the plan will be written by the county’s Criminal Justice Advisory Board.
The commissioners appointed the following individuals to the Bradford County Tourism Committee: county Economic Development Manager Brian Driscoll, Bradford County Auditor Susan Storch, Bradford County Commissioner Mark Smith, Central Bradford County Chamber of Commerce Administrator Sharon Kaminsky, Linda Warner, Gene Ann Woodruff, Roger Druck and Bonnie Borek.
The county will also be acquiring 10 additional touch-screen voting machines, which will be used if there is a high voter turnout, said Marie Zbyszinksi, Bradford County elections director. The voting machines will also be used as “spares,” as the county currently has no back-up voting machines if one were to break down, she said. The money used to purchase the voting machines will come from the state.
