WYSOX — The Bradford County Historical Society recognized two people at its annual meeting on Monday at the Towanda Country Club.

The Historical Society named Marilyn Campbell Cole as the recipient of this year’s Leo E. Wilt Historian of the Year Award. She has been a volunteer in the Society since 1993, Historical Society President Kelsey Jones said.

Named as Recipient of the Clement F. Everly Award for Outstanding Service was awarded to Joyce M. Tice for her work on the Tri-Counties History and Genealogy Site, which according to President Jones receives over 4,600 hits a day. The site offers genealogical information to people in Bradford and Tioga Counties in Pennsylvania as well as Chemung County, N.Y.

Another event at the meeting was a visitor from another time as Florence Howanitz playing Frances Slocum, helped tell the story of a Quaker girl who was captured by Native Americans 230 years ago.

The Society also welcomed guests Bill Bachman, Jonathon Pineno and Florence Howanitz who presented a short film titled “Frances Slocum, Child of two Americas.” Bachman wrote and directed the film, with Pineno writing the musical score. Howanitz played an elderly Frances Slocum, or Mocanaquah, as she was known to the Native Americans, in the film.

The film tells the story of Frances Slocum, who was abducted from her home in Wilkes Barre in 1778 and later reunited with her siblings some 60 years later. Parts of the film were shot in French Asylum, Bachman said.

Slocum was taken from Wilkes Barre to a site near Peru, Indiana, making stops on her journey near Wyalusing and Athens, according to the film. Some living relatives of Mrs. Slocum, still living in Indiana, played parts in the film, according to Bachman.
