RIDGEBURY — Suzanne Bloom, a children’s author from Binghamton, N.Y., visited the students at Gladys Burnham Elementary School in Ridgebury on Thursday to share some of her stories, illustrations and experiences.

Bloom said she’s been writing books for 20 years, having 11 books now with the 12th book, “A Mighty Fine Time Machine,” on the way.

Some of the books have recurring characters, she said, though many are different, and often written from personal experiences.

Often, she gets inspiration for her books from the students at schools she visits, Bloom said, adding that she visits 50-60 schools throughout New York and Pennsylvania each year.

It wasn’t Bloom’s first time visiting the Athens School District. She said she was at Sheshequin-Ulster Elementary School in the spring.

Bloom met with each grade in the school, from kindergartners to fifth-graders. Along with reading them some of her books, she also let them ask her questions about being an author and illustrator.

When talking with Chad Carlson’s fifth-grade class, Bloom brought out some of her earliest illustrations, beginning in kindergarten, to show the students how she had progressed in her artistic abilities.

“I love to do details, I love to draw people, and I love to fill my pages with color,” Bloom told the students.

When talking about how she gets her story ideas, she said there is often a bit of truth in each of them.

One of her books, “Piggy Monday: A Tale About Manners,” is about children who don’t have good manners and turn into pigs. She said the book was based on her son’s kindergarten class.

“Well, they didn’t turn into pigs, but they were almost about to,” Bloom said.

Tiffanie Jayne, librarian at Gladys Burnham Elementary School, said that in preparation for Bloom’s visit, the students had been reading some of her books and getting familiar with the stories’ characters.
