Sayre narrowly edged Towanda 6-5 in boys’ soccer action on Thursday. The Redskins got three goals from Taylor Skerpon and Trey Hildebrandt while Towanda’s Garrett Sims had four goals on the day.
Sims led off the scoring, getting two goals in the first three minutes of play off Anthony Ventello assists to make it 2-0 Towanda. Hildebrandt came back in the 12th minute to score unassisted followed by Skerpon off a Josh Burlingame assist in the 25th minute to make it 2-2. Sims then got his hat trick off a Tyler Bennett assist in the 28th minute put Towanda ahead 3-2. Skerpon then scored two minutes later off a Scott Beeman assist to tie it up, then again in the 34th minute off another Burlingame assist to give Sayre a 4-3 advantage going into halftime.
In the second half Hildebrandt extended the Redskin lead to 5-3, scoring in the fourth minute, with Burlingame and Skerpon were credited with the assists. Kevin Jurnack made it 5-4 in the 19th minute off a penalty kick, but Hildebrandt once again scored for Sayre off a Skerpon and Terrence Meeker assist to make it 6-4 Redskins. Sims, assisted by Cody Curry, scored his fourth goal of the day in the 37th minute of the second half to make it 6-5 but Towanda’s comeback fell short and Sayre took the game.
“The front line of Taylor Skerpon, Trey Hildebrandt and Josh Burlingame played an outstanding game,” Sayre coach Ron Prados stated, “with support from the midfield of Terrence Meeker, Scott Beeman, Mike Stezer, Dan Weber and Riley Card.”
“I was expecting a very defensive game from both teams with an overall low score,” Towanda coach Jaime Castillo stated. “It turned out to be just the opposite, a great attacking game with plenty of goals; and the action never stopped until the last second when Garrett Sims hit the cross bar in an attempt to tie the game. What a tremendous effort by both teams.
“Garrett Sims had a fantastic game for us, scoring a total of four goals, and providing the driving motor behind a midfield line,” Castillo stated. “Ryan Cora and Jordan Ferguson had a terrific game as central defenders; these guys battled every ball with speed and great confidence.”
Sayre had seven shots on goal with two corner kicks while Towanda had 14 shots on goal with nine corner kicks. In the goal Cody Curry had four saves for Towanda while Tyler Young had 10 saves for Sayre.
Towanda is now 4-10-2 overall and 4-8-1 in the NTL. Sayre is now 10-6 overall and 8-5 in the NTL. Towanda’s next game is against Bishop Neuman at home on Saturday while Sayre will host Northeast Bradford.
