ATHENS TOWNSHIP — As the smoke cleared away from the mobile home in Athens Township that had been up in flames only a half-hour before, the only part of the home that was not damaged by fire was a doghouse in front of the front steps.

The fire, which began at around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, destroyed the home at 1411 Tutlow Creek Road, off Mile Lane Road, though there were no injuries, said Athens Township Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Dean Covey.

Chris Sutton was the owner of the building, and the occupants of the building were Robert Northrup III and Aaron Cole, Covey said, adding that they had not been home at the time the fire broke out. The family pet, which was in the home at the time, was rescued, Covey added.

“When we got here, the fire was fully involved,” he said.

Athens Township Volunteer Fire Department, with the help of the other fire departments that were called out, including Waverly/Barton Fire District, South Waverly Fire Department, Ulster/Sheshequin Fire Association, Chemung Volunteer Fire Department, Smithfield Township Volunteer Fire Department and Ridgebury Township Fire Company, had the flames extinguished by 12:15 p.m., going back into service at 2:15 p.m., Covey said. He added that they had no problems getting water to the fire.

“In fact, we had too much water,” he said.

The fire was started accidentally by a portable electric heater that was in the home’s living room, Covey said. He said the occupants of the house did not have insurance on the items inside the house, and it was not known if there was insurance on the structure.

The homes’ occupants are now staying with family members, Covey said.

North Towanda blaze

NORTH TOWANDA TOWNSHIP — No cause has been determined yet for a fire that caused moderate damage to a trailer in North Towanda Township on Monday, fire officials said.

The fire seriously damaged a room that had apparently been added onto the trailer, said Gary Wilcox, chief of the North Towanda Fire Company.

There was also smoke damage and a little water damage elsewhere in the trailer, which is located in Lafy’s trailer court on U.S. Route 6, he said.

There was no one home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries, said Gerald Sheets, assistant fire chief.

A man named John Boyer had been living in the trailer, but he had not been back to the trailer in several months, Wilcox said.

Wilcox said he did not know where Boyer is currently living.

The fire was reported at about 5 a.m. Monday by a passer-by, Sheets said.

Chief Wilcox said that, in accordance with his fire department’s protocol, a state police fire marshal has been called in to determine the cause of the fire.

Wilcox said the trailer is salvageable.

“If they want to repair it, that’s up to them to do that,” he said.

The trailer court is located four-tenths of a mile east of Saco Road.
