The Athens Township Board of Supervisors recently unanimously denied a request for gas company EOG Resources Inc., of Houston, Texas, to withdraw water from Tozer’s Landing in Athens Township, according to Athens Township Supervisor Robin Smith.
According to a public notice from EOG Resources published in the Oct. 23 issue of The Daily Review, EOG Resources Inc. had “filed an application with the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) seeking surface water withdrawal … from a surface water source bordering Athens Township and Athens Borough ... for use in drilling and development of natural gas wells located in Bradford County.”
The project would draw up to 322,000 gallons of water per day, the notice stated.
Smith said that they had only received notification that EOG Resources were intending to apply for a permit, and on Nov. 19, the supervisors denied the application because they own the area the company was looking to draw water from.
“We didn’t want that in the park,” Smith said.
This water-pumping operation is different from another that Athens Township is currently dealing with, with gas company Chesapeake Appalachia, Smith said.
Talking about the Chesapeake project, Smith said: “The landowner has leased his property; there’s only so much control we have.” She added that the township can’t control how much truck traffic comes through the area from the water-pumping project or how much water is withdrawn, but they can control things related to their zoning ordinance.
