CANTON — The Canton Area School Board handled two big-ticket items Thursday by approving a collective bargaining agreement with the Canton Area Education Association and accepting the resignation of district superintendent Jeff Johnston.

The board, which has been negotiating for two years with the association, approved a pact that runs from 2007-2008 and expires at the end of the 2010-2011 school year with raises of 3.75 percent per year, district business manager Mark Jannone said.

He said the teachers will contribute to their healthcare on an escalating scale, starting at $10 a pay the first year and $30 a pay at the end of the contract. There had been no contributions before.

At the meeting, education association president Trina Beers said she was “pleased that it’s done,” and Clyde Garvine, chief negotiator for the association, said he was “glad it’s over,” when asked for comment.

Board member Harold Hopkins thanked the association, and board president Denny Sourbeer thanked the board members who served on the negotiating team.

The motion regarding Johnston read that the board was accepting his resignation effective June 29, 2009, in accordance with the terms of the agreement and general release between Johnston and the board.

Sourbeer read Johnston’s resignation letter. In the letter, he wished everyone in the district he’s been associated with “nothing but the best for the future.”

When asked the reason for his resignation, Johnston said after the meeting: “I got enough years in for retirement, and I decided to do that. I have the flexibility to do that with the agreement with the board.”

He said he was leaning toward retirement, but also was leaving his options open should a position come up that he found attractive enough to pursue.

His career spans 35 years, and he came to the district in 2005.

Both votes were unanimous. Board member Gary Black said Johnston’s resignation was accepted with regret.
