Grants announced

Two western Bradford County fire companies are among a total of 28 local volunteer fire and ambulance service companies who will receive more than $227,000 in grants from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commission, Rep. Matt Baker (R- Tioga/Bradford) announced in a news release.

Those in western Bradford County include the following:

· Innes Hose Company Inc., $19,746

· Oscoluwa Engine & Hose Company Inc., $9,873

· South Creek Volunteer Fire Company Inc., $9,500

In addition, two other local organizations will get funding. They are Tri-Township Ambulance Association, $3,805, and Smithfield Township Volunteer Fire Department Inc., $10,060. Several others in Tioga County will also get grants.

“There are few professional occupations that require someone to risk their life to save others,” Baker said in the news release. “Grant awards like these help our first responders stay current with new equipment and better training, which in turn helps them better protect our residents.”

The grants are awarded under the Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program and range from $3,500 to more than $19,000.

Canton High School offering free Financial Aid Night

Canton High School will host a free Financial Aid Night at 7 p.m. on Jan. 26 in the school’s auditorium, according to a news release from the district.

District high school students and their parents are encouraged to attend this informative session to get a better understanding of the student aid process and how best to begin planning to fund their higher education.

A student aid expert from PHEAA’s Regional Office will be available to provide information and answer questions.

Parents and students will learn what they need to do to apply for all types of financial aid, including completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is required to qualify for most student aid programs such as the Pennsylvania State Grant, Federal Pell Grant, institutional awards, and low-cost federal student and parent loans.

Participants will also be briefed on Pennsylvania-specific aid programs as well as the importance of searching out free money awards like scholarships to help pay for education costs.

Families with questions about the free Financial Aid Night should contact Joan Shuman, career resource specialist, or Jessica Friedlander, guidance counselor, at (570) 673-5134.
