Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Talent Show
TOWANDA - Around 400 people came out on Saturday night to the Towanda High School Auditorium for the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Talent Show.
People of all ages, some from the public and some from the hospital's staff, showed off their talents at the event, with dance, comedy and musical acts.
Chairman Linda Ferrario said the show would bring in around $4,000-$5,000 dollars for the auxiliary. The auxiliary raises more than $50,000 for the hospital each year, she said, through various fund raisers. The talent show was held at a new venue this year, Ferrario said, having moved from the Keystone Theatre for a larger facility. The show was started 10 years ago by Dr. Larry Linnell, she said. This year's talent show was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Stephen Becker, who passed away earlier this year. Ferrario said Becker performed in some capacity in the talent show each year.
During the show, Ferrario and hospital President and CEO Gary Baker took a moment to honor Becker, presenting his wife, Cathy Becker, with a bouquet of flowers and thanking her for all that Becker did for the hospital. Ferrario said Becker had a "monumental impact" on the hospital since he started there in 1992. Parks and other hospital staff wore "wild ties" and suspenders, as he said Becker was always dressed similarly.
Baker said they were grateful for the use of Towanda's auditorium, which is a great venue for the talent show, Parks said. He also thanked the auxiliary for putting on the show each year, adding that it takes a lot of organization and a lot of hard work to make it happen. Although the show was started 10 years ago, Baker said, there were a few years when it wasn't held, so Saturday's event was the eighth talent show the hospital had held.
"I think people are always amazed at the amount of talent we have in Towanda," Ferrario said, adding: "It's nice to showcase some of that, and that's what we do."
