FOR THE REVIEW

The Sayre Public Library has kicked off its annual fund drive. According to Peggy Burkhart, president of the Library Board of Trustees, the library's fund goal is $15,000.

Purchasing the most current books and periodicals, up-to-date reference materials, and the newest DVDs and videos is more expensive every year. Significant funding is necessary to maintain the library and to prepare for unforeseen expenses. The library recently learned that state monies will be reduced by 23 percent at a time when there is the added burden of purchasing digitization equipment for the local history collection.

The Sayre Public Library serves, educates, and entertains thousands of people every year at no cost. In the past year, the library held computer classes for seniors, seminars on a wide array of topics ranging from medical issues to environmental concerns, weekly preschool story hour, a dynamic summer reading program, and so much more. In 2009, the library received several grants to provide special programs for our patrons. Of particular note is the Big Read, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Senior Spaces program funded through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. These grants allow the library to provide quality programs that promote lifelong learning and enrich the quality of life of our community. Although the library received the grants, the funds cannot be used for day-to-day operational support of the library.

More than six thousand people are served by the Sayre Public Library. The library provides free services to support lifelong learning through public access computers, WiFi, classes, seminars, workshops, programs for children, teens and seniors, and of course books, and more. The constantly growing collection is made up of more than 30,000 books, 1,000 periodicals, and 1,700 audiovisual materials.

All donations are fully tax-deductible. The Sayre Public Library is located at 122 S. Elmer Ave., Sayre, PA 18840. For more information please call the library at (570) 888-2256.
