Sayre discusses options on intersection

SAYRE - Members of the Sayre Borough Police Committee recently discussed what could be done to make the intersection of North Elmer Avenue and Mohawk Street safer, following a fatality that occurred in the area a few weeks ago.
Chairman Gene Cerutti said that he, Sayre Police Chief Kevin Guinane, and Sayre Borough Manager Dave Jarrett had looked over the intersection after the incident occurred. Cerutti said that it was a very tragic and unfortunate situation, but he doesn't know of much more that can be done to make the area safer. He said there are stop signs on both sides of the intersection.
Committee member Henry Farley suggested that perhaps the borough could install yellow warning signs around the intersection, as an additional precaution to drivers.
In other business, the committee discussed a proposal being considered by Sayre and Athens Borough which - if approved by both communities - would consolidate their two respective police departments. It was pointed out during the committee meeting that the cost of running the Sayre Police Department requires only 14 percent of the borough's budget, which is very good compared to many other communities throughout Pennsylvania. Cerutti said that such figures give the borough little incentive to change, under the circumstances. Sayre Mayor Denny Thomas said he believes the committee should wait until the new borough council is sworn-in in January before it makes any recommendations on which direction should be taken on the matter.
