Dairying in Bolivia meeting coming up

FOR THE REVIEW

An organization working in Bolivia to provide care for orphans was recently featured in the magazine, Progressive Dairyman and also Farmshine. Love in Action International Ministries is a non-profit ministry focusing on the development of orphanages (Andrea’s Homes of Hope and Joy) in Latin America. One of the ways they are making this ministry sustainable is through the development of a dairy herd at the orphanage in Guayaramerin, Bolivia. The dairy herd at Love in Action helps to provide the children in the orphanage with fresh milk which is hard to obtain in their area. LIAIM is in the process of growing their herd of Girolando cattle and equipping their facility with dairy processing equipment. The people at the orphanage dairy hope that the dairy will also help to provide employment for those in the community and a source of income for operational costs at the homes.

Dr. Ben Laudermilch of the Endless Mountains Veterinary Center PC of Rome, Pa. is very interested in helping this organization by potentially providing embryos to them. The Vet Center has a Girolando-Holstein cross heifer that they have been waiting to do some advanced reproductive work on, and make Girolando embryos for use in developing countries. This breed of cattle is very heat tolerant, disease resistant and feed efficient.

Dr. Laudermilch has asked the leaders of the LIAIM organization, as well as some members of their dairy board, who are from southern Pa., to come and share information about their organization with producers and anyone interested in missions and/or milk in this area. The LIAIM folks are looking forward to meeting people in our area and increase the word of what they are doing. Dr. Ben is excited about this opportunity to help kids at the orphanage have dairy products and teach them agricultural skills for their future along with the Biblical training they are already receiving at the orphanage.

Anyone interested in the dairy industry or missions work is invited to come and hear their stories about trying to make cows make milk in the rain forest, and about the children they are helping.

This meeting will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12 at the North Rome Wesleyan Church at 3374 North Rome Rd., Rome, Pa. Bring your family and enjoy a cookies and milk reception in the fellowship hall following the meeting. To learn more about Love in Action go to the website: www.myloveinaction.com.
