League play marches on

By the Review

League play for local basketball teams marches on as teams enter the middle of January and the heart of their schedules.

NTL races are starting to flesh out while teams all over are looking to extend their seasons.

In boys' Division-I NP-Mansfield beat fellow league unbeaten Wellsboro to sit atop the league standings.

In Division-II NEB defeated Sayre to work their way up the standings.

On the girls' side Athens edged Troy to set up a meeting with Wellsboro to see who sits atop the standings in Division-I.

Sayre continued their strong play to take control of Division-II.

Up north Waverly survived Watkins Glen for boys to stay close to Notre Dame in the IAC.

On the girls' side the Lady Wolverines continued to roll through the IAC.

In the Mid-Penn Sullivan County girls are undefeated in league play.

Girls

Team of the Week

Athens Wildcats

The Wildcats survived two battles this past week.

They went 2-0, edging Troy by 2-points on Thursday to stay unbeaten on the season. And they did this while battling illness as they had players in and out of the line-up all week long.

Sullivan County continued their strong play while Notre Dame, Waverly, Canton, Sayre, Williamson and Galeton also went unbeaten on the week.

Player of the Week

Cortney Parsell, Galeton

She had 27 points as the Tigers topped Cameron County, a tough North Tier League team to help Galeton keep pace out West.

Parsell is averaging 14.9 ppg so far this season.

Sullivan's Kaiti Beinlich (16 ppg this week) has also had a good week along with Wellsboro's Jessica Grab (15 ppg), Ariana Gambrell (18 ppg) and of course Troy's Morgan Gentile (21 ppg).

Boys

Team of the Week

North Penn-Liberty Mountaineers

Nobody has enjoyed the flip of calendar more than NP-Liberty.

They went 0-7 in 2016 and so far are 3-0 in 2017 beating Canton (who won their holiday tournament), Sayre and Northern Potter.

They will try to keep it going by hosting CV, Williamson and Wellsboro this week.

North Penn-Mansfield also went undefeated this past week.

Player of the Week

Brock Burleigh, NPM

Last year's All-Region Player of the Year is doing it again for the Tigers.

In a match-up of NTL unbeatens, Burleigh led a NP-Mansfield rally with 22 points and six boards. He added double-doubles in wins over Troy and Edison to help them go 3-0 this past week.

Waverly's Gavin Judson also had a strong week, with a career high in points (17) and assists (six) as the Wolverines beat Watkins Glen despite missing Hunter Bodine.

GAMES OF THE WEEK

Girls

Tuesday, Jan. 10

Notre Dame at Tioga, 10:30 p.m.

Don't expect a lot of scoring, but do look forward to a lot of competing. Both teams have had to gut out wins this year and expect the same this game.

Mary Foster anchors the Crusader defense while Courteney Crater (11.3 ppg last three games) has picked up her scoring.

Tioga has any number of players — Kirsten Schweiger, Grace Manwaring, Olivia Howland or Sarah Hollenbeck — who can lead them in scoring.

Wednesday, Jan. 11

Wellsboro at Athens, 7:30 p.m.

The last two unbeatens in NTL play.

Athens is coming off their closest game of the season — 35-33 over Troy — but have Ariana Gambrell (15.5 ppg over last four games) blossom into a good scorer with illness taking affect on the team.

The Hornets have opened up their offense as of late with Emma Poirier, Jessica Grab and Janessa Davis hitting double figures recently alongside leading scorer Elizabeth Poirier (13.5 ppg).

Notable: Sayre will travel to Williamson in a match-up of the top two teams in Division-II. This will feature two of the area's top shooters in Sayre's Kaeli Sutryk and Williamson's Brittany Boyce.

Sullivan will also face Muncy, who is currently tied for second in the Mid-Penn standings behind the Griffins.

Thursday, Jan. 12

Smethport at Galeton, 7:30 p.m.

A rematch saw the Tigers pull away from Smethport. Cortney Parsell had 27 points in that game.

Notre Dame also faces upstart Odessa-Montour, who only has one loss entering the week.

Friday, Jan. 13

Wellsboro at Troy, 7:30 p.m.

The tough week for the Green Hornets continues as they take on the league's top scorer in Morgan Gentile (23.6 ppg).

Her sister Sam Gentile (12.8 ppg) is also good at putting the ball in the basket and does a lot of the dirty work as well.

Boys

Tuesday, Jan. 10

Athens at Wellsboro, 7:30 p.m.

The winner keeps pace behind NP-Mansfield for the Division title.

Both are guard-oriented teams with Ethan Lane (17.3 ppg) leading the Wildcats and Dalton Prough (14.4) the top scorer for Wellsboro.

A loss here would make it tough to make up ground in the second half of the NTL season.

Canton will also be at Northeast Bradford. The Warriors are 4-1 in their last five while the Panthers continue to have an up-and-down season.

Thursday, Jan. 12

Canton at Sayre, 7:30 p.m.

A big game if either team wants to see the sunnyside of .500.

Byron Matthews (11.5 ppg) leads Canton while Marcus Bauman (15.8 ppg) leads the Redskins.

Both are seemingly going in opposite directions at the moment, with the Warriors working hard to get to .500 while Sayre is 1-3 in their last four game.

Friday, Jan. 13

Waverly at Newfield, 7 p.m.

The Spartans have been one of the top teams in the IAC for the past few seasons and could prove to be tough, especially if Hunter Bodine is still hobbled for the Wolverines.

However, if anybody can handle an injury it is Waverly. Gavin Judson, Jon Ward and Zach VanHouten are all averaging double-figures alongside Bodine.

A win here is also crucial for them to keep pace with Notre Dame in the divisional standings.

Saturday, Jan. 14

Wyalusing at NEB, 7:30 p.m

The East side of Bradford County rivalry.

It was a barn burner last year, and expect the same this time around.

Jon Morrison (18.2 ppg) does more than just score for the Rams, he also rebounds at a high rate.

NEB will be looking to keep the ball out of his hands with their guard pressure of Garret Smith, Austin Senn-Bishop and Zak Smith.

Also on Saturday, Athens travels to Sayre for their league game. In the Valley Christmas Tournament, they played to a 2-point win for Athens.
