Woman killed in one-car accident

Staff Writer

SONESTOWN — A Sullivan County woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday on U.S. Route 220 in Sonestown, Sullivan County, the county coroner said.

Renee E. Whitby, 49, of Dushore was driving a pickup truck north on snow-covered Route 220 when she lost control of the vehicle on a left-hand curve, causing the vehicle to slide off the east side of the roadway, state police said.

The vehicle traveled down an embankment, and when it struck the bottom of a ditch, it flipped up and landed on the driver’s side, before coming to rest on its roof, police said.

Whitby, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the vehicle, police said.

Sullivan County Coroner Wendy Hastings said she pronounced Whitby dead at the scene at 12:38 p.m., approximately an hour after the accident occurred.

The cause of Whitby’s death was “multiple blunt force trauma,” Hastings said.

There were no passengers in the vehicle, which was a 2000 Toyota Tundra, authorities said.
