Bradford County commissioners sell timber from county park

TOWANDA - At their meeting on Thursday, the Bradford County commissioners approved a timber harvesting agreement with Brad Smith of Columbia Cross Roads to remove trees that had been cut down for the installation of a natural gas pipeline in Mt. Pisgah County Park.

The trees had been cut down by EOG Resources Inc., which laid the pipeline.

The county will receive $4,800 from Smith, said Bradford County Commissioner Mark Smith, who is not related to Brad Smith. As part of the agreement, Brad Smith will provide the in-kind service of cleaning out timber from an overgrown cemetery that the county owns, and which is located behind the Bradford County jail.

The commissioners also re-appointed Doug Ulkins of Athens and Mike Miller of Towanda to the county's Mental Health/Mental Retardation Advisory Board. The re-appointments are for three-year terms, which will expire on Dec. 31, 2012.

Uh, what am I missing here? It's a park. Parks are supposed to have trees? Maybe not. And how wide is that right-of-way? Inquiring minds want to know.

Our Commissioners truly represented the people of Bradford County in this entire matter. They leased our land at less than half the bonus being paid today, and at a far lower royalty than the royalties being paid today. Moreover, bonus and royalty numbers, even now, continue to ascend. Nobody could wait, not even for a year. Everyone had to have their money post haste. What a bunch of maniacal losers. It's no wonder the gas companies love us. Were I a buyer, I also would embrace people who sell their most valuable possession at half price . . or LESS!!
