Cargill teams with Boy Scouts for hunger relief

share thisCargill Salt, Watkins Glen, has teamed up with the local Five Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America, by being a major sponsor for this year's Scouting for Food Program, the largest single food drive in the Twin Tiers, with close to 200 Packs and Troops participating. Cargill contributed $3,900 towards the printing cost of this year's informational door hanger.
On Saturday, Nov. 7, Scouts will distribute the hangers to local residents. The hanger explains the Scouting for Food program and gives instruction asking residents to place canned goods in a grocery bag and put it out on their front porch for pick up.
The following Saturday, Nov. 14, Scouts will collect the bags and deliver them to their local food pantries. "This is a perfect fit", explained Plant Manager and Eagle Scout, Don Chutas. "Cargill's vision is to be the global leader in nourishing people and we are doing our part on a local level."
Bill McCahill, executive director for Five Rivers Council, also an Eagle Scout, explained, in the history of the event, the scouts have collected well over one million food items. This year, according to McCahill, they expect to gather over 100,000 food items. The Five Rivers Council calls this their "Good Turn Day" when thousands of scouts turn out for a single event to help others in need.
Five Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America is composed of ten counties in New York and Pennsylvania that make up 5,500 square miles. Traditional values and community support are the hallmarks of the program.
