New Albany woman victim of scam

A 50-year-old New Albany woman was recently the victim of a scam, state police said.

The woman had offered an item for sale on "Craigslist" on the Internet, police said.

The woman had a buyer e-mail her and confirm the purchase, state police said.

The item was too large to ship, so the buyer sent the victim a check in the amount that covered the shipping and the cost of the item, police said.

The check was received by the seller and then deposited into the seller's bank account at the Citizens & Northern Bank in Bradford County, police said.

The buyer then requested an excess amount included in the check be sent via Western Union back to another location that the buyer provided, police said.

The victim then withdrew an amount close to $3,000 and sent it to the buyer, police said. The bank then notified the victim that the check was a fraudulent check, police said.

"Do not conduct business transactions via the Internet with unknown people unless the site you are using is secure," the state police at Towanda said in a press release that they issued about this scam, which occurred on Aug. 13.
