TOWANDA - Towanda Elks Lodge 2191 on Saturday presented its Citizen of the Year award to Nick Hurley, who is the general manager of Hurley's supermarkets.

Lois McDonald, who is the exalted ruler of the lodge, presented the award to Hurley at the dedication ceremony for the monument to slain Bradford County Sheriff's Deputies Chris Burgert and Mike VanKuren.

McDonald said that lodge doesn't give out the award every year because the recipient "has got to be someone really deserving and very involved in the community."

Hurley "does things to protect the community and help (the citizens)," McDonald said.

He deserves the award for "all the things he has done (to organize) the Fallen Heroes Ride, and for the programs that Hurley's supermarkets provides that help families and children," such as bicycle safety programs and fundraisers for food pantries, McDonald said.

Hurley's supermarkets was also involved in raising funds to purchase a police dog for the Towanda Police Department.

"Any organization or anyone who goes to (Hurley) and needs help finds that he is always available to promote (their cause) and help in any way he can," she said.

McDonald presented a plaque to Hurley at the ceremony. His name will also be added to a board displaying the names of past recipients of the award. The board is hung on a wall inside the Elks lodge in Towanda.

When accepting the award, Hurley told those at the ceremony: "Support your local foundations if you can. Things will come back to thank you in the end."

McDonald said the award is given out by the lodge approximately once every five years.

Good choice of an award recipient. Nick has been helping a number of organizations and always does so graciously and with a smile.
