Letters to the Editor

To all of our valued patrons and friends:

EDITOR: Sadly, Lisa's Little Philly of Wysox, Pa. has been forced to close their doors. We were saddened to have to do this, but were left with no choice. We want to personally thank all of the wonderful people who made our business a success. We would also like to thank the Wysox Chamber of Commerce for their warm and inviting grand opening. It was a great day for us, for the residents of Wysox and for our family. We felt so welcomed into the community.

It was personally difficult for us to close this location because it adversely affected many people's lives. Specifically, several layoffs within the company. This is the hardest part to take because people counted on us to have a job and with this economy life is very difficult.

Again, please accept our gratitude. Our other location (in Sayre) is still thanking everyone for their business and loyalty.

Gary and Lisa Brennan and the staff of Lisa's Little Philly

Carantouan Greenway agrees with sportsmen

EDITOR: The Carantouan Greenway agrees with Sportsmen for Responsible Energy Development. The Federal government must repeal the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act exemptions for oil and gas development under the 2005 Energy Policy Act and other federal legislation. These exemptions come at the expense of safe drinking water and threaten fish and wildlife habitat. These oil and gas loopholes exempt accepting responsibility of supporting bedrock environmental and public health laws.

The Carantouan Greenway and the Sportsmen believe that energy development should be permitted, but only with adequate protection to preserve water resources and fish and wildlife. Both agree that energy companies should use the best available data and implement only the best management practices. Appropriately managed projects can help provide a reliable and substantial economic base for the region for years to come.

The Sportsmen cite many problems that have developed in the Rocky Mountain West due to oil and gas development. Many of the problems have developed from a piece-meal approach rather than considering a cumulative analysis of the full build out of wells and their connectors.

Another problem area is insufficient funding for professional staff to monitor or enforce leases at all levels of government. There must be clearly established monitoring protocols that are enforceable. The public must be kept apprised as to what is happening and how any mitigation is going to be implemented.

Exotic and invasive species must be curtailed and liability for reclamation and restoration must be the responsibility of the oil and gas companies. Our lands and waters are nature's gifts shared by all of us. We have a responsibility to our children and our children's children to see to it that they can inherit a viable, healthy landscape. Fore more information go to www.sportsmen4responsibleenergy.org.

Until wars in Iraq and Afghanistan come to an end ...

EDITOR: I noticed that many of the flags in the area are flying at half mast out of respect for the terrible tragedy that happened at Fort Hood. Almost every day a tragedy occurs in Iraq and Afghanistan. I suggest that flags fly at half-mast until the casualties in our two wars come to an end.

Mr DuPont,

I am inferring from your comments re: universal health insurance that you do not have health insurance. If that is, indeed, so, I am curious as to why I should pay, with my tax dollars, for your care should you become severly ill, have a serious debilitating accident, need hospitalization for any reason? It doesn't take a lot...a trip down the stairs, catching a bad flu, falling asleep with a lit cigarette....so many things can befall us all, the fickle finger of fate can point at you, too.

Windham, You are certainly entitled to your opinion. I don't believe the judge reads the newspaper and if he did he wouldn't let it or any other biased information source influence his judicial decisions or duties. He carries out his obligations according to the law.

I am not a republican, which should not come as a shock to anyone, who has followed my entries. In fact, some have called me a bleeding heart liberal. So, you may be surprised to learn that,
I have been a supporter of Judge Smith, and until some real proof of malfeasance is uncovered, I remain so. I have disagreed with his opinions at times. This present situation with the Crow-Nees, and the Brennans, makes him look foolish at best, as did the internet surfing. Hopefully, he has learned, and will take steps to avoid any further tarnishing of his reputation.
That said, nothing has been proven, which makes him unsuited to be a Judge.
It is not difficult for any reporter to put a spin on a story, which shows the position of the reporter or employer. Advocacy journalism has risen to an art form. The Jury is still out as to whether the Daily Review wishes to discredit the Judge. Altho, it is not unheard of for a newspaper to "go after" a politician, or competitor.
I wish the Brennans well. I hope their business continues to do well. Times are tough, and there are many factors that affect a small business. No side in this landlord/tenant dispute has been well served by the reports in the paper.
Sue A 11/20/09 12:33
I do not usually respond to these forums, however, after reading "time will tell" I became very angery. I am a Bradford County republican faithful to the end BUT I will be the first to put a "NO SMITH" sign in my yard at his election time. Judge Smith has sat in that seat so long that he thinks he is untouchable. You blame the newspaper campaigned against him and it shouldn't be believed, maybe the newspaper is just trying to reveal whats going on in Bradford County. I stand with many that don't need to read a newspaper to believe Judge Smith needs to be replaced. I have watched him in action and believe that many times his judgement is clouded by the very same news coverage. I could care less about his landlord/tennant situation, it is his effect on Bradford County that I hope the newspapers keep covering.
Windham Pa 11/20/09 10:02
Sue A. I agree. There's another factor in play here that has not been considered. There have been a number of angry responders in this forum and others about Judge Smith. I believe they are a small but very angry minority. The majority of county residents, and especially the Republican faithful, are overwhelmingly supportive of Judge Smith, and understand completely the newspapers campaign to discredit him. They weren't about to patronize an establishment that joined the Review's misguided crusade. Since his support in the Valley is as strong or stronger than in Towanda, don't expect Lisa's in Sayre to expand their customer base. I used to enjoy going there to eat when in the Valley, but I'm certainly not going back. If the Brennans are looking for somebody to blame, they need look no farther than their local newspaper.

Advice to the parties involved, don't try your case in this forum.
The other parties are surely not going to do so. Yes, it is irritating to be made public fodder, but when the letter to the editor appeared, you made yourselves targets. There are no doubt a multitude of reasons, and those are best left for the legal system, not a blog on the Daily Review. Your food was good. The economy is bad. Put it all together it makes for hard times.
Best wishes for the future.

end of story..know your facts before you judge.the magistrate ordered lisa's to pay the refrigeration bill,it has been paid.jeff smith was ordered to pay the other half.we got no breaks whatsoever.if not for the arrogance and sneakiness of smith and brown things would have been different.would you stand for you landlord threatening eviction every month and then locking up my food coolers after my rent was paid.where's the justice there. on its way i hope. we were mislead by the crow knees,i should have listened to all the people who were wronged by the crow knees in the past.but i thought not knowing roger or jeff, that they were honest business men. my food is great as far as the price you get what you pay for. i know my customers ate quality food and the price is right for what you get. we have been in business for 8 years so i would consider us good business people.once again the bill ordered by the magistrate was to be a 50/50 split between landlord and tenant. that has been satisfied.also we had no lease we were working with a month to month tenancy, thats what the smith wanted.so thats what he got.
the ball wiil drop sone 11/19/09 06:17
#___#, The tenants were not meeting the terms of their lease. The magistrate found in favor of the landlord. Then the magistrate stuck the refrigeration contractor with the bill that the tenants owed. The Brennans got every imaginable break in this deal. Good food, high prices, poor business people.
end of story 11/19/09 11:56
Honestly, if this turns out to be more than a landlord/tenant dispute taken to extremes, I will be surprised. I think the producers of 60 minutes have enough to cover, with heath care, Palin, the jobs summit, terrorist trials, children being murdered, etc, that very little, if no consideration will be given to this dispute. I will be happy, if the daily can just report the facts.
I realize it is kind of a spectator sport to see someone we view as powerful fall, but often the pleasure is short lived. I will be happy to wait for the facts. Sometimes, the truth surprises us.
Sue A 11/19/09 11:42
the state police are still working on smiths wrong doings at lisas and all the other conplaints that they have, it takes time. i feel they are doing it right. we will be the first to know when the crow knees all go down .some of them are all ready singing keep your eyes on the review.you will read it thier first they know more then you think smith will be gone and you will remember the day
not sorry 2 see them go 11/19/09 07:20
Gotta love the hillbillies: 60 minutes should've covered landlords trying to collect money owed from their tenants?? And, then the business going out of business because no one came there to eat to begin with??? WHY??? Why should have 60 minutes covered that, Joe??

The flag of Texas does not have special standing. This is an old, and false, belief. For your edification:
Taken directly from the field manual regarding flying the state flags;
"When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the right of the flag of the United States (the viewer's left). "
No, exception is made for Texas.
Sue A 11/18/09 10:24
Roadkill; False - urban legend, just like the idea that Texas has a right to secede from the union - also false. Though I wish they would. Check Snopes.com if you have any doubts.

Better polish-up on the positioning of other flags to the Flag of the United States. Yes, you are mostly correct except for one item --- the State flag of Teas can be and for the most part be at the same height as the American flag. Just for your info. this is only state that can do this.
Roadkill 11/18/09 05:36
Little Phillies was too expensive, the food wasn't that good, and you had to wait too long for your food. The food wasn't worth the wait plus the price. Also the location wasn't too good, too hard to get out and go left. Anyway, we ate there once. The food business is rough. People have to eat but they go where it's cheap, good, and fast, unless you're into fine dining. Anyway, good luck to the owners with their other restaurant and any future endeavors. They will need it in this economy.
Restaurant Critic 11/18/09 04:36
Joedupont, Ethics investigation? You typify the problem. Too many people only go by what the paper wrote. That shouldn't be a problem, but the newspaper's bias against Judge Smith is well established. Did we ever see any follow-up to the allegations of trespass against Judge Smith? If there was anything to it wouldn't you expect the newspaper to trumpet it? The fact that we heard nothing should tell you all you need to know. Lisa's went out of business because they didn't draw the customers away from already established eateries in the area. Judging from the number of cars in the parking lot at their Sayre location, I wouldn't hold my breath that they'll be around long either. Take a look at the currently running Review poll about how often people are frequenting fast food restaurants. While Lisa's isn't fast food, the implications are clear. When economic times are tough, the first place people cut back is eating outside the home.

Well, I do not know how to address some of Mr. DuPont's assertions.
Mr. Gates, and Warren Buffet, support health insurance for all, and both have stated they have no problem paying additional taxes to support this. If Mr. DuPont has the finances that Mr. Gates has, I am sure he can carry proof of financial ability when he enters the hospital. Bill Gates has, and provides, health insurance. We are required to have auto insurance, or proof of financial ability to pay, because of the potential for injury to ourselves, others, and our vehicles. Not once have I heard that as an issue of freedom. We value our vehicles, we understand that an accident can leave us unable to meet our needs, we understand that put others, physically and financially, in jeopardy if we do not have insurance. However, it seems impossible for these oppositionists to grasp, that lack of health insurance endangers ourselves, and puts others at risk. We all pay extra in premiums to covered the losses of medical facilities from the uninsured.
It makes sense to insure all citizens. It makes sense economically, politically, socially, and morally.
The golden rule states, "do unto others as you would have done unto you." If you would not want yourself burdened with debt, causing bankruptcy. If you would not want yourself, to fear taking your child to the doctor or emergency room, because of the bill. If you would not want yourself, to die prematurely because you do not have the means for proper, timely treatment. If you would not want to lose your insurance because of a pre-existing condition. Then why would you want that for your fellow citizen.
Go ahead, call me a bleeding heart liberal. I stand by my ideals, and as a nurse, I am sick of watching the erosion of compassion and empathy. This has nothing to do with freedom, or the lack thereof. This is about our the moral character of our nation.
I am very much behind Chris Carney. He did the right thing. May Bob Casey and Arlen Specter join him.
Now for the Flag, the President ordered it be flown at half-staff on federal buildings. If the governors desire, they can order it to be flown at half-staff on local buildings. Local municipalities may do the same. Any individual who wants can lower their flags, for any reason they deem worthy. It is not proper to ever fly any flag above the United States flag, in this nation. State or other nations flags are to be displayed beneath or on poles lower than the United States flag. When a flag is damaged beyond use, it can be properly burned. Most American Legions or VWF's have regular ceremonies for this. As the daughter, sister, and mother of veterans, flag etiquette, has always been a part of my life. There are rules. Check the internet, or even read the Scouts Manual.
As for the legal troubles of the Mott family, that has been dealt with. I realize many wanted blood, but let us not raise this to the level of a capital crime.
Judge Smith appears to acting silly in his middle age, but nothing illegal from what we can gather. Maybe he needs new friends and new hobbies.
I guessing that the person charged with cocaine possession/sales
would have been provided bail. We can't lock up folks who make bail. It takes a long time for the legal system to reach a verdict. Maybe we should allow the courts to act, and draw no conclusions about a teenager. I am sure most of us would not the world to draw lifelong conclusions about us based on our teen years.
Sue A 11/18/09 12:53
Dear Gary and Lisa,
There should have been an ethics investigation as to what happened to you. But most likely that will never happen. 60 Minutes should have covered this, but then again 60 minutes should have covered the JUdge John Mott and Brenda Mott story too. But they didn't.
I don't know Judge Smith so I can only go by what the paper wrote.
I am more interested as to why an 18 year old was not immediately
locked up for supplying cocaine to minors. Supposedly his hearing was Nov. 13th. ANyone hear anything.
joedupont 11/18/09 11:40
Dear Matt,
Unfortunately there is only flag etiquette. You can burn it, fly it under a Mexican flag , etc. etc. There are NO laws protecting the dignity of the flag. There are only those who will make you buy mandatory health insurance under the threat of fines, prison and I guess ultimately a gun, who fell that burning the American flag as a protest is a wonderful thing. Congressman Carney disguests me as does Senator Casey. ONly Sen SPecter , at this time, has not taken a position on mandatory health insurance. Should Bill Gates be forced to buy health insurance? Why? You think that he will get sick
go to the emergency room? So if Bill Gates should not have to buy
health insurance why me? Or do I have to prove my wealth?
Joe DuPont 11/18/09 11:29
Dear Ron Riker,
I suggest that Americans fly the American flag at half mast while our goverment mocks our dead soldiers by taking away our constitutional rights! Forcing Americans to buy health insurance under threat of fines and jail. This is not America. This is a slap in the face of every veteran both living and dead.
