River friends summer camps: Will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, every Tuesday in July in Elmira. A new outdoor adventure half-day summer camp in Elmira will use two giant canoes on the Chemung River to teach children about paddling, the water cycle, water safety, local river history and macroinvertibrates. The students will eat lunch on a river island that is home to nesting ospreys. Chemung River Friends in Elmira and Southern Tier Kayak Tours (STKT) will use two 26-foot-long Voyageur canoes at the Grove Street Boat Launch in downtown Elmira. The camps, for boys and girls ages 9-14. The fee is $45-per-camper, per day. The students can participate in as many of the half-day camps as they please. Each camp schedule and content is the same.
