An Elmira man is in the Bradford County Correctional Facility on $25,000 bail after Athens Township police said he tried fleeing Walmart with more than $1,000 worth of items in a cart.
Matthew Thomas Spallone, 32, faces a felony charge of retail theft following Thursday’s incident.
According to police, they were called to the store around 5:19 a.m. after employees received a tip that some people in the store were planning to walk out without paying for items. Employees had waited by the self checkout to catch anyone trying to exit without paying. It wasn’t until the employees headed outside by the grocery doors that they heard a loud crash at another set of doors that customers weren’t allowed to go through. A woman ended up leaving the cart behind, running past the garden center and over a hill to Elmira Street. The man who was with her, Spallone, pushed his cart back into the store and ended up exiting the grocery doors. Police caught him behind the store near Winslow Street.
Police noted that the items in his cart totaled $1,371.20.
Spallone was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Larry Hurley. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 25.
