The Independent Baptist Church in Towanda is getting ready to host its annual family clothing and household items giveaway event to help the local community.

According to Sue Wheeler, one of the event’s coordinators, the giveaway started several years ago with coats, then expanded to other clothing items. Now, there are a variety of household items and furniture up for grabs, provided by various donors from throughout the community and the church.

Wheeler stated that this year’s giveaway has a huge collection of items to choose from.

“Last year there was furniture, bed frames, appliances, and more given away,” said Wheeler. “We never know what we are going to get.”

She noted that last year’s giveaway featured more than seven truck loads and trailers of items that were given away to hundreds of families in need.

“We started this event because we wanted to show the community how much we care about them,” said Wheeler. “We wanted to show them that the church does care about them.”

Those who are interested in coming should bring boxes or bags and help themselves to anything that they can find.

There will be clothing and shoes for all ages and sizes as well as toys and household items for those that can use them.

The giveaway will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20.
