Retiring secretary recognized for 45-plus years

Dolores Smith receives a gift and a card from Superintendent Craig Stage Tuesday in recognition of her 45 1/2 year career as a secretary in the Harriet Child/SRU elementary building.

For more than 45 years, Dolores Smith has been a fixture of the Harriet Child/SRU Elementary office in Smithfield Township.

During Tuesday’s school board meeting, the Athens Area School District recognized the end to that long career with a gift and public recognition, followed by a standing ovation for her retirement.

“Dolores, I want to thank you for everything you’ve done,” said Superintendent Craig Stage.

Looking back at her career, Smith said she’s enjoyed working with the kids and the teachers the most. She also touched on the many changes she’s seen over the years, from how children are educated to the technology implemented in the building.

“But I went with the flow,” she said. “I learned how to do it.”

She added that it feels good to finally be in retirement.
