TOWANDA — Sixty motorcyclists rode 106 miles through four counties, beginning and ending in Towanda, to support the Bradford County Veterans Memorial Park Association on Sunday.
“We stayed dry, it was great. The route we took — everywhere was shaded and cool. It was a great ride,” said president of the Post 49 American Legion Riders Mike Powers after the fourth annual ride.
The ride was organized by the BCVMPA, Troy Legion Post 49 Riders, Towanda Legion Post 42 and the Towanda Sons of Legion to raise funds for the final stage of the Bradford County Veterans Memorial Park in Towanda Borough.
According to Chris Boggs, a board member of the BCVMPA, the final stage of construction for the park is an aluminum rotunda over the “Quintessential Soldier” statue in the center of the memorial.
Each rider was charged a fee to participate in the ride through Bradford, Columbia, Sullivan and Luzerne counties. Each also received a chicken barbecue lunch, provided by the Towanda Sons of Legion. Extra chicken was sold to benefit the BCVMPA, and a 50/50 raffle was also held.
Powers said that the chicken was “excellent” and that the camaraderie between the riders and legion members was a reward in and of itself.
“So many veterans are in need. It’s good to see the community rise up and cater to it,” he added.
Boggs said that he and the BCVMPA hopes to have the rotunda ready to be installed in the park by the end of the fall.
“Today was a success,” he concluded.
