A long-time teacher and coach who has most recently served as assistant high school principal and athletic director with the Spencer-Van Etten Central School District will soon be making the transition to Sayre High School.

On Monday, the Sayre School Board approved the hiring of James A. Howey of Waverly as assistant high school principal, filling a vacancy created with the resignation of Joseph Rovinsky in January.

Howey’s resume on LinkedIn includes four years with U.S. Army Military Intelligence, nearly 17 years as a physical education teacher with the Tioga Central School District, and nearly three years as assistant high school principal and athletic director with the Spencer-Van Etten Central School District. He has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ithaca College, a master’s degree in education from the University of New England, and a CAS Certification in School District and Building Leadership through the State University of New York College at Cortland.

“He brings experience and comes very well regarded,” said Acting Superintendent Barry Claypool.

Howey was hired with a salary of $77,250 per year.

A start date for Howey has yet to be set.
