Anna Evancho Wood, 203 Pine Tree Rd., Sayre (Athens Twp.) passed away on June 7, 2019 at the Robert Packer Hospital, peacefully of natural causes, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on July 15, 1924 in Jessup, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania, Anna was the third daughter and seventh child of Alexander and Paraskeva Antoniw Evancho. Anna graduated from Manchester (NY) High School and attended Cortland State Teachers’ College in Cortland, New York. While in high school, Anna auditioned for and was selected to perform on her violin for the New York State All-State Orchestra, which was held at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

On Nov. 2, 1946 Anna married the love of her life, Fordham F. Wood Jr., and they enjoyed 61 years together before Fordham’s passing in 2008.

Anna will be forever remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family. She had a boundless energy and exuberance for life that was with her until her final moments on earth. Anna had a positive attitude and was never afraid to tackle a new task. She was a hard worker and gave 100 percent to anything and everything she did. She was a role model to her children and grandchildren with her strong work ethic. Anna had a magnetic smile, and vivacious personality, that drew others to her.

She was a woman ahead of her time; having been employed in positions that were traditionally held by men. Over the course of her lifetime, she worked at the Romulus Army Depot during WWII, IBM, General Shelters in Sayre, Thatcher Glass, Remington Rand, Ingersoll-Rand Foundry, and most recently before her retirement, the Robert Packer Hospital Maintenance/Housekeeping Dept.

Anna was fiercely proud of her Ukrainian heritage, Byzantine Rite faith and her hardworking immigrant parents.

When not working hard, either in or outside the home, Anna loved to travel and see new places. She enjoyed spending time in nature and appreciated the earth’s beauty in all seasons. Anna was also an avid reader.

Anna was a lifetime member of the American Legion and V.F.W. auxiliaries.

Anna is survived by her three daughters, Sharon (Tom) VanFleet of Athens Twp., Charlene Smith of Sullivanville, New York, Cheryl Wood-Walter (Gregory Walter); grandchildren, Thomas (Julie) VanFleet, Matthew VanFleet, John (Brandy) Smith, Alex Walter, Michael Walter and Lauren Walter; great-grandchildren: Devin and Ashlyn VanFleet, Mya and Morgan Smith and Elaina VanFleet.

In addition to her beloved parents and husband, Anna was predeceased by her grandson Brian VanFleet and her siblings Mary, Michael, John, Anastasia, Paul, Peter and Stephen.

The family will provide flowers and ask memorials be made to either the Spalding Memorial Library, Athens PA, Sayre Public Library, or the Sayre V.F.W.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11 at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home 314 Desmond St., Sayre, PA.
