JoAnn R. Burke, 89, of Towanda, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully at the Skilled Nursing Unit at Towanda Memorial Hospital in Towanda on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. She was born Sept. 12, 1929 in Towanda, the daughter of the late LeRoy Robbins and Mildred Groesbeck Robbins Stull.
JoAnn graduated from Towanda High School in 1948.
She was employed as supervisor and then chief operator for Commonwealth Telephone Company in Towanda for 30 years. In later years, she was employed as an office receptionist for Dr. James P. Noone for five years.
She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda where she served as chalice bearer for several years and thoroughly enjoyed participating in the annual bazaars there. She will be warmly remembered and deeply missed by her family and friends for her generous heart, a dry sense of humor which would always bring on a belly laugh and her pleasant smile. She adored dogs; having several throughout her life, that took a piece of her heart; most recently, Zeke, her faithful dog and companion. JoAnn was an avid reader and loved to cook, crochet, knit and especially enjoyed going shopping.
She is survived by the light of her life, John Boyle of Oklahoma; three nephews, Len E. Ennis, M.D. Jon Robin Ennis and Jeremy E. Ennis; two nieces, Conaley J. Visneski and Angelique M.Heigle. Also surviving is her nephew, Gary W. Visneski and her great-niece, Paige E. Bitting, both of whom she adored. She will be greatly missed by many good friends, especially, Brigette Callear and Lee Baker who faithfully and selflessly cared for her in recent years.
In addition to her parents, JoAnn was preceded in death by one sister, Constance M. Ennis and her brother-in-law, Leo E. Ennis.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of JoAnn’s life to be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1 Main Street, Towanda, with her pastor the Reverend Canon Maureen AtLee Hipple officiating. Burial will be private in the Faithful Companions Pet Cemetery, East Smithfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in JoAnn’s memory to the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation to support the Ennis-Visneski Scholarship Fund for Youth 725 W. Front Street, Berwick, PA 18603 or Stray Haven, 94 Shepard Road, Waverly, NY 14892.
