After months of speculation, Southern Columbia wide receiver and ESPN’s No. 4 prospect in the 2020 recruiting class Julian Fleming has chosen Ohio State University as his collegiate home.
Fleming made the decision official with a short clip on Twitter, Friday morning.
The video included some of the 5-star recruit’s marquee plays during his high school career, which highlighted his speed and elusiveness.
Fleming also did a voiceover during the clip that described himself as an athlete and what is important to him on the next level.
“When you see me you see a five-star prospect. You see a can’t miss football player. You see someone who’s been given advantages because of my size, speed and my potential. You see someone who can help your favorite team, but I’m more than just a football player,” Fleming explained.
“I am a son. I’m a brother, and I’m working to become a man. I work when nobody else is looking, so I can be everything that I’m destined to become. For me, my family, no one else. To you I’m a football player. To you home is a place. To me home is a feeling. To me Ohio State is home. Go Bucks.”
The human highlight reel caught 78 passes for 1,524 yards and 22 touchdowns and helped Southern claim its ninth state championship last season in a win over Wilmington.
Tigers’ head coach Jim Roth said that he and Fleming talked about his big decision a little while ago. Roth was pleased with how Fleming showed maturity during the process.
“We had a discussion. I think he considered a lot of different things. He’s aware that coaches come and go and he looked at the big picture. He used the right criteria,” Roth noted about how Fleming approached his college choice.
Roth added that it is good for SCA football and commended Fleming on how he remained dedicated to the program during recruitment.
“It’s great for the program, great exposure. It’s been good to see how he’s handled the whole thing. He’s stayed committed to the program and he’s been a team player,” Roth said.
Fleming will be apart of an Ohio State 2020 recruiting class, which ranks ninth in the nation. It also includes another 5-star prospect in offensive tackle Paris Johnson (Princeton; Cincinnati, Ohio) and 4-star center Luke Wypler (St. Joseph Regional; Montvale, New Jersey).
There will be a press session today at 10 a.m., near the Southern Columbia High School main office.
